Parents influencing education

The PIE program is a multifaceted mentoring and tutoring program sponsored by the Interprofessional Commission of Ohio and The Ohio State University P-12 Project in Weinland Park Elementary School in the Columbus Public Schools that seeks to:

  1. Increase student reading comprehension

  2. Increase student reading achievement

  3. Develop young leaders and mentors

  4. Improve parent involvement in the learning of their children

  5. Teach parents study and learning strategies to use with their children

  6. Develop positive school-family-community partnerships

  7. Provide children with books they can take home and have in their homes

The PIE program pairs first and second grade students with fourth and fifth grade peer tutors to help them in the area of reading comprehension and additionally seeks to involve parents in the learning of their children. Utilizing a mentoring model, the PIE program operates with the assistance of Ohio State graduate students who serve as mentors to the elementary students, and Ohio State faculty members who provide professional development to the parents.
